Environmental Philosophy

Alaska Trail Guides operates with the goal in mind to operate as an environmentally sustainable company. Anchorage is situated in a unique geographical location in Alaska. While Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, it’s still a small home town. Nested at the base of the Chugach Mountains and wrapped by Turnagain Arm and Knik Arm, fed by the Pacific ocean, our climate is a combination of mountain and ocean. Alaska Trail Guides is conscious of its impact on the environment and aims to be a leader in the guiding industry in its protection, education, and promotion of the environment.  One way is we strive to help people connect and interact with the world around them. Coming to Alaska is like stepping back in time. Cell service is limited compared to traveling in the lower 48 states. Road systems are limited and oftentimes there is only one road to get somewhere. If it’s closed, it’s closed and you make the most of the situation. AKTG philosophy is that the first step to protecting that which we love is having a connection to and understanding of what it is we are fighting to protect.

Alaska Trail Guides has established a plan to protect the environment through minimizing our impact as a business.

  • Following established Leave No Trace Ethics
  • Teach others Leave No Trace Ethics
  • Reduce examples: reducing fuel consumption by utilizing transportation effectively for daily operations, limit use of paper by having online waivers which are stored in an electronic vault and having all operations managed through our secured online database, reduce our impact on the lands that we travel by utilizing appropriate trails and trail etiquette
  • Reuse and recycle examples: all paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic products that are used are recycled, equipment that is to be retired from company use will be donated or repurposed
