“I cannot recommend Alaska Trail Guides highly enough. The pacing was perfect for my family, the scenery was beautiful.” ~ TripAdvisor
Experience Valdez with ease on an electric pedal-assist fat tire bike! Explore a small town full of wildlife, surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and history and see why it’s often called Alaska’s ‘Little Switzerland’. Electric pedal-assist fat tire bikes offer the perfect opportunity to explore Valdez for even the most casual of riders. You will go farther and faster while still enjoying the exercise, scenery, and fresh air. The optional electric assist makes our bikes great for casual riders and bike enthusiasts alike. Pedal effortlessly along a flat, paved bike path which is offset from the road and takes you out of town, along coastal wetlands, and over glacier-fed rivers with views of hanging glaciers, mountains, and waterfalls.
Your friendly, knowledgeable guide will share the history of this small town, from the Gold Rush to the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, to the present day and the oil pipeline terminal. The bike ride will take you from the Valdez Port, 11 miles to the Solomon Gulch Hatchery and back. Along the way, learn about the natural history of the area, fishing industry, see salmon jumping up the fish ladder (in mid to late summer), watch eagles soaring overhead and sea otters, seals, sea lions and perhaps even a bear loitering along the shoreline. The activity at the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery varies based on the month, the pink salmon return from late June to August and swarm the hatchery. At the hatchery, you’ll have 45 minutes to explore the self-guided walking tour and enjoy a snack while savoring the scenery.

The trails were immaculate, safe, and easy to ride (only one somewhat challenging climb). Derrick made sure we were all good with the speed. There were 10 in our group from wide age range. When we saw a smallish black bear on the trail (doesn’t happen often they said), Derrick had us dismount, remain quiet, put the bike between us and the bear, and then he retrieved his bear spray and was ready to use it. He didn’t need to. The bear calmly meandered over the ridge. Besides that excitement, Derrick stopped frequently to explain about the history, geography, flora and fauna of the area. At the end, after about 9.5 miles, Ellie was there with the van, a snack, and more water. Great ride in a beautiful setting!
