Driver/Biking Guide

Organize and execute biking trips that cater to all guests according to Alaska Trail Guides standards and procedures.

Key Responsibilities and duties:

  • Demonstrate sound judgement and decision-making skills (risk management)

  • Set up, pack up, and actively provide assistance to all guests using the bikes each day. Deliver briefings and generally interact with guests at all times.

  • Be prepared to lead different trips in either as either a bike guide or driver guide, according to operational needs of the business

  • Learn client expectations and strive to meet them

  • Relate local knowledge including natural, geological and glacial history

  • Assess and maintain all equipment, preforming repairs on equipment or notifying management in a timely manner

  • Leave No Trace Ethics and attitude of environmental stewardship

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Experience towing a trailer: 1+ years

  • Cycling experience: 2+ years

  • Outstanding customer service and communication skills, solid organizational skills and a strong knowledge of outdoor activities, cycling and equipment.

  • Wilderness First Responder Certificate or Wilderness FA & CPR or CPR & FA

  • Clean driving record for past 3 years

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Required

  • Ability to lead fun, varied, safe and informative bike rides

  • Knowledge of biking maintenance and repair

  • Knowledge of emergency First Aid procedures and the ability to react calmly, quickly, and effectively in emergency situations

  • Knowledge of Anchorage trail system, Hillside singletrack trail system, and Kincaid singletrack trail system

  • Able to work independently and on own initiative

  • Ability to work well within a team and maintain effective working relationships

  • Punctual, reliable, able to give and receive constructive feedback

  • Strong Physical Fitness: Guides split their time between biking and van support however must be physically fit to ride every day if needed. In addition to cycling, we expect all guides to be able to comfortably lift 40 lbs.

Mountain Biking Guide

In addition to the above we also expect our mountain biking guides to be competent and confident in the following bike mechanic skills:

  • Remove and replace either a tube and/or tire from both the front and rear of a bike, and properly seat the wheel in the dropouts with proper tightening of the quick release lever in 5 minutes or less

  • Remove and replace a bike chain in 5 minutes or less

  • Adjust a bike saddle

  • Properly adjust both brake pad alignment and lever throw on a road bike

  • Properly adjust both front and rear derailleurs on a road bike

  • Adjust a bike helmet for the proper fit
